Servants of Cross

In the early 19th century, caste segregation and Untouchability plagued the society. This era saw the rise of Mahatma Gandhi and other social leaders who focussed on the reform movements. At the same time, in the land of Malankara, Deacon Peter  began his deicated service for equal rights for the so called lower castes in the Hindu society. With his simple life style and care and love for the neglected and his mission to preach the class less Gospel of Christ, Fr. Peter was very influential and attracted many to the Orthodox faith.

In 1924, H.G. established the 'Servants of Cross', (Sleebadasa Samooham) a monastic missionary movement to care for the upliftment and welfare of the people attracted to the Orthodox faith.

H.G. initially even refused the sacred episcopacy fearing he would be unable to continue to the missionary work of the Church. Later H.G. Pathros Mar Osthathios thirumeni was chosen to shepherd the underdeveloped diocese of Malabar. Today, he is popularly know as 'Malankara Gandhi'.

While the mission faces challenges, the mission is still active and is led by H.G. Zachariah Mar Anthonios thirumeni today.
